With Tereza and the Giardino, artist Tereza Brichtová (1978) marks her return ‘onto the scene’ through painting after a longer break, with an exhibition illustrating her path towards rediscovering her own identity. The exhibited large-format watercolours were made as part of a nine-month conceptual project during which Brichtová created an entirely new garden in order to reflect various aspects of utility, durability and beauty. It is not a botanical but a metaphorical garden, one that works with memories and symbols. Tereza and the Giardino is an artistic reflection of the artist’s inner landscape.
The titular garden offers a space for regeneration and cultivates the world of ideas with the promise of a harvest. Brichtová’s works record the processual evolution of and systematic care for an injured soul. Her art is a regenerative putting down of roots, the splitting and pruning of new rhizomes in the form of a ‘mental hybridization’. It also reflects the careful selection of quality seeds and the eradication of pests, all while recording the hard work necessary for a joyful harvest of the mind. The long-term character of Tereza and the Giardino is complemented by sketches, paintings and diary entries. The site-specific project was made in line with the gardening calendar (January – September 2024) exclusively for GASK’s exhibition space in Café Fatal. For this exhibition, Brichtová has also made a series of mica ‘paintings’ and limited-edition hand-engraved glasses with a floral motif.

Tereza Brichtová (1978) is a graduate of professor Adéla Matasová’s Studio of Conceptual and Intermedia Tendencies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. She did a study exchange
at the Escuela Arte in Granada and participated in several group exhibitions while still a student. Important solo exhibitions include From the Other Side at the Entrance Gallery (Karlín Studios, 2011) and a reprise showing, From the Other Side II, at the chateau in Mikulov. She subsequently focused on her family, worked privately and collaborated with her brother Filip Brichta in following on the research of Dobromila Brichtová. She is the co-author of the visual design of the Dietrichstein Gallery and author of the visual conception for the exhibition Desire and Dignity – both for the Regional Museum in Mikulov (2019). Her works can be found in private collections and also in the collection of contemporary art of her home town of Mikulov. In 2005, she co-founded the family brand Piršč Porcelain, and she served as the company’s art manager until 2018. She also helped to bring together the Křehký brand with the Mikulov chateau, a partnership that found expression in the Křehký Mikulov festival. And finally, Tereza Brichtová has done the exhibition design for a number of projects straddling the line between art and design. She lives and works in Prague.
